Alt Numpad code trouble
OK so I'm having some trouble with Alt-Numpad codes:
For those that don't know holding down the alt key on your computer, pressing some numbers on your numpad, then releasing the alt key prints a special character to your screen.
For example: Alt 5 = ♣
Now I want to print: '≈' and everywhere I have looked tells me the code is Alt 247 but when I press Alt 247 I get: '¸' I have tried Alt 0247 (Prints: '÷') and still no luck. Can anyone help me out? Is it a different code, do I need to change a setting, has it been made different by some windows update that I have no clue about? (I have Windows 7 btw)
Thanks,
Alex

Damn, thanks for letting me know, it's a pain to have to find it then copy-paste whenever I want to use it.
If anyone knows what the code for it is please let me know.

Re: Alt Numpad code trouble
Go to 'Start' -> 'Run'. Enter "charmap" (no quotes).
You'll get that window that you also get when you'd do Insert -> Symbol in Word.
There, it will tell you the Alt code, and that one will work. If it doesn't, change your font and watch the codes change.
This page has a list, and that one says your '≈' is definitely not ALT 247..

So umm.. basically, you're screwed.
If it returns the '÷', that means you're calling up the codes from the first link.
Not sure if you can somehow switch to the other. all I can tell is that I couldn't find a keycode for '≈'.

Re: Alt Numpad code trouble
Thanks for the advice.
http://www.irongeek.com/alt-numpad-ascii-key-combos-and-chart.html
That site has two code tables.
IBM (AKA: OEM) / PC Extended ASCII Has the '≈' as Alt 247
Window's ANSI/ISO Latin-1/ANSI Extended ASCII Has the '÷' as Alt 247
But neither of them has the '¸' that I get when typing Alt 247
Putting a 0 infront of the number seems to get the second tables symbols.
(Alt 0247 = '÷')
Also I couldn't find '≈' in charmap (I looked there)

Re: Alt Numpad code trouble
In charmap, select "show advanced", then pick "unicode", not "Windows-Western" -the one it's likely at-.
On that note, I run XP on this PC and have the '¸' when I put in ALT+247, and '÷' when I put in ALT+0247.

Re: Alt Numpad code trouble
About two thirds down the right hand slider, you have this kind of characters:
┼║╓═╒╔╖╕ and a few 'grayscale' blocks, like you'd see in DOS programs.
Before those fancy lines begin, there's your '≈', and I can confirm it can't find it if you put it in search. That doesn't work with me either.
