Alliance colors

Post by Kenzu on Sat Jan 09, 2010 1:43 pm

Me and and Ishurue were playing with changing the colors of our alliances and were partially successful.

there were 2 problems however. The length is limited, which means that I could manage to have only

World Rep
or
WR
instead of the whole name

at the same time there was another problem.

All alliance names are surrounded by brackets []
When changing alliance colors, the last bracket dissapeared.

This means it looked like this:

( WR

instead of like this:

(WR)

I propose an update, where all alliances can choose an alliance color.
(This means that the name of the alliance next to an alliance members name will appear in the chosen color)

Yup the word (letter) limit was a problem.

B/c it only let:
Code:
<font color="purple">Mujengan<
NOT
Code:
<font color="purple">Mujengan</font>
It displayed:
Mujengan< in purple and b/c the tag wasn't closed the first [ was blue but the end one (]) was purple, being colored by the tag in the name...

There are a number of bugs surrounding leaving off closing tags, especially in Message of the Days'.

I don't know how to use styles, I dont know if you can use styles in these text boxes, styles would probably take even more text for this small of a job.

Those "bugs" as you call them prevent the people who have even a little bit of insight into mysql and php coding to give themselves infinite resources.

anyways 4-5 years and 90% of the html syntax will be deprecated or obsolete lmao, so you guys hope the person responsible for formatting and layout gets the conversion to CSS done soon

Edit:
afaik best would be to use "div"
at least that one you know will work as it should everywhere

so for you alex:
Code:
<div style="color:purple">text in here</div>

Thank you, that seems to work, at least in my MotD.

I only know some very basic HTML so I just use what i know, for the MotD's and other Aderan stuff it seems to work fine.
I will probably look into styles and learn some more coding in the future, it seems interesting, but I dont know it at the moment.

it wont work in the near future because I will disallow the tags altogether.
but will implement something along the lines of the forum script, you press a button and you get some special tags into your text which will allow you to use color, etc.
However not the standard html/css tags.

For now texts only modify some very dangerous characters but I will be restricting what tags people can use very soon.

OK I'll enjoy my MotD while I can *Sniff*

If possible can you make it so that the following can be used in MotD's:
Colors
Center
Bold
Italics
Underline
Size(Maybe)
I have no idea how hard something like that would be to code so that it is, more-or-less, un-abusable (the current html is abusable, as you know) but yeah...

HTML is anything but un-abusable, trust me. As it is now, it is actually quite a bit of a security risk.

I support alliance pictures!

They could be located on the alliance page (100x100 or similiar size), and there could also be an 30x30, 40x40 or 50x50 alliance picture just like the race picture on the battlefield.

Most likely I will write a script that will copy over their motd code and send it to them as an ingame message and delete the whole MOTD.

So your code and text will not be lost, all you need to do is copy paste and edit it to fit the legal syntax or use simple plain text until you know how to edit it

And kira, what you posted was sort of the plan for the alliances

ffs... this adds too much lag to page load... you should restrict the number of chars allowed in MotDs.

I wonder how much bandwidth you will loose if everyone will add to his MotD a picture converted to ascii, in html code with styles. Is this realy worth it?

each character eats 1 byte, 8 bits.

a 5000 character text eats 5KB. I don't know about the colors and I didn't try to find out. If someone knows how much color codes add I'm actually moderately curious.

Now, I can't imagine having a problem with page loads, except on my phone when I'm in the countryside and don't have access to a 3G signal.

Maybe we could/should add an option to enable/disable viewing MOTDs. I would definitely use that on my phone, in that certain scenario.

Precisely.

I tryed to post the shit used in ioz's MoTD in code tag and on this forum game me the error too many characters.

Look how many characters this shit uses (if one char has 1 byte, then imagine how disatruous this MotD is - in the code, each char has a style and a color code, wich adds a lot more to the syze in kb):

the color code is hexadecimal right?... then for each color code you have another byte, is it?... this means that the 52k chars in ioz's example become 104KB in the code. And then there are the chars used for style...

I dunno very much about these because i'm not a programmer, but i can think about it, at least.

No, it's just 52k characters, that includes characters used for style.

I think an option to enable/disable viewing MOTDs coupled with a limit on number of characters in the MOTD would be the best answer.
